CRA Mileage Log Requirements for 2026

The Canada Revenue Agency requires a detailed vehicle logbook if you claim business driving on your tax return. Whether you're self-employed filing a T2125 or an employee filing a T777, your log must include these details for every trip:

  • Date of the trip
  • Destination (where you drove)
  • Purpose of the trip (client meeting, delivery, job site, etc.)
  • Kilometres driven for the trip

You also need your vehicle's odometer reading at the start and end of each tax year, and you must record both business and personal driving to calculate your business-use percentage.

Full Logbook vs. Simplified Logbook Method

The CRA offers two methods. The full logbook method requires you to record every trip for the entire year. The simplified logbook method lets you keep a detailed log for one full base year, then only track a 3-month sample period each following year — as long as business use stays within 10 percentage points of the base year.

The CRA accepts paper logbooks, spreadsheets, CSV files, PDFs, and digital records from mileage tracking apps. You must keep your records for six years after filing.

CRA Mileage Tracking FAQ

What does the CRA require in a mileage log?

The CRA requires the date, destination, purpose, and kilometres driven for every business trip. You also need odometer readings at the start and end of the year, and a record of both business and personal driving to calculate your business-use percentage.

Can I use an app instead of a paper logbook for CRA?

Yes. The CRA accepts digital records from mileage tracking apps, spreadsheets, CSV files, and PDFs. OdoAlibi automatically records every required field and exports CRA-compliant reports you can submit with your return or share with your accountant.

What is the simplified logbook method?

The simplified method lets you keep a full logbook for one base year, then only track a continuous 3-month sample period each following year. Your business-use percentage during the sample must be within 10 percentage points of the same period in your base year. This saves significant effort once you have a base year established.

What is the CRA mileage rate for 2026?

For 2026, the CRA rate is 73 cents per kilometre for the first 5,000 business kilometres and 67 cents for each additional kilometre. In the Territories (Yukon, NWT, Nunavut), the rates are 77¢ and 71¢ respectively.

Do I need to track personal and business trips separately?

Yes. The CRA requires you to record both business and personal driving so you can calculate an accurate business-use percentage. OdoAlibi makes this easy — swipe each trip to classify it, and the app calculates your split automatically.

How long do I need to keep my mileage records?

You must keep your vehicle logbook and all supporting receipts for six years after filing your tax return. OdoAlibi stores your trip history in the cloud, so your records are always accessible when you need them.

Stop worrying about whether your log will hold up. Let OdoAlibi handle it automatically.
