IRS Mileage Log Requirements

The IRS requires a contemporaneous record of your business driving to claim the standard mileage deduction. "Contemporaneous" means recorded at or near the time of the trip — not reconstructed months later at tax time. Your log must include:

  • Date of each business trip
  • Destination (where you drove)
  • Business purpose (client meeting, delivery, job site visit, etc.)
  • Miles driven for the trip

You also need your vehicle's odometer reading at the start and end of the tax year, and the total miles driven for business, commuting, and personal use. The IRS uses these numbers to verify your business-use percentage.

Self-employed individuals deduct business miles on Schedule C. At the 2026 rate of 72.5¢/mile, 15,000 business miles equals a $10,875 deduction. Without a proper log, the IRS can disallow the entire amount in an audit.

IRS Mileage Tracking FAQ

What does the IRS require in a mileage log?

The IRS requires a contemporaneous record of every business trip with the date, destination, business purpose, and miles driven. You also need odometer readings at the start and end of the tax year. Estimated or reconstructed logs created months after the fact are at high risk of being rejected in an audit.

Can I use an app for IRS mileage tracking?

Yes. The IRS accepts digital records from mileage tracking apps, as long as they contain the required trip details (date, destination, purpose, miles). OdoAlibi records all four automatically with GPS and generates IRS-compliant reports you can download or share with your accountant.

What is the IRS mileage rate for 2026?

The 2026 IRS standard mileage rate is 72.5 cents per business mile, up from 70 cents in 2025. Medical and moving mileage is 20.5 cents per mile (down from 21¢ in 2025). Charitable driving is 14 cents per mile (set by statute, rarely changes).

What is an IRS-compliant mileage log?

An IRS-compliant mileage log is a contemporaneous record that includes the date, destination, business purpose, and miles for each trip. It can be a paper notebook, spreadsheet, or digital record from an app. The key requirement is that it's recorded near the time of the trip, not reconstructed later.

How long do I need to keep my mileage records?

The IRS generally requires you to keep records for three years from the date you filed the return, or two years from the date you paid the tax, whichever is later. OdoAlibi stores your trip history in the cloud, so your records are always accessible.
