CRA Vehicle Logbook Requirements
The CRA requires a logbook with the date, destination, purpose, and kilometres for every trip. You must also record odometer readings at the start and end of the year, and track both business and personal driving to calculate your business-use percentage. Keep records for 6 years after filing.
Simplified Logbook Method
After keeping a full logbook for one base year, you can switch to tracking just a 3-month sample period each following year — as long as your business-use % stays within 10 points of the base year. Learn more →
What Is a CRA Mileage Log?
A CRA mileage log (also called a vehicle logbook) is a record of your driving that the Canada Revenue Agency requires if you claim business vehicle expenses on your tax return. Whether you're self-employed filing a T2125 or an employee with a T2200 filing a T777, the CRA needs proof of how much you drove for business versus personal use.
The logbook must include the date, destination, business purpose, and kilometres for every trip. You also need odometer readings at the start and end of the tax year. The CRA uses these numbers to calculate your business-use percentage, which determines how much of your vehicle expenses you can deduct.
The CRA accepts paper logbooks, digital spreadsheets (Excel, CSV), PDFs, and records from mileage tracking apps. Use our free template above to create a compliant log, or let OdoAlibi track your trips automatically with GPS.
